Google Sunsets Gemini CLI and Gemini Code Assist IDE Extensions Effective June 18
Google has stopped serving requests for Gemini CLI and the Gemini Code Assist IDE extensions effective June 18, 2026, for individual users on Google AI Pro, Ultra, and free tiers via Gemini Code Assist for individuals.
The change also impacts Gemini Code Assist for GitHub.
Details of the Sunset
- Gemini CLI and Gemini Code Assist IDE extensions: Stop serving requests today (June 18, 2026) for Google AI Pro, Ultra, and free individual users.
- Gemini Code Assist for GitHub: No new installations allowed on GitHub organizations starting June 18, 2026. Existing requests will stop being served in the weeks following June 18.
Google states the decision follows shifts in user needs toward multi-agent systems that require multiple agents communicating to split work and solve complex problems. The company is consolidating on a single product with a unified backend.
Migration Path
Google has directed affected users to Antigravity CLI, which became available to everyone on May 19, 2026.
Antigravity CLI retains key Gemini CLI capabilities, including:
- Agent Skills
- Hooks
- Subagents
- Extensions (now available as Antigravity plugins)
Additional improvements include faster execution (built in Go), support for asynchronous workflows on complex tasks, and a unified architecture that shares the same agent harness as Antigravity 2.0.
Antigravity CLI supports quick grounded answers, scaffolding new coding projects, and provisioning cloud infrastructure.
Actions to Take
- Individual developers and Google AI Pro/Ultra users: Migrate workflows to Antigravity CLI immediately. Download is available at https://antigravity.google/download.
- Teams using Gemini Code Assist for GitHub: Stop new organization installations as of today. Plan to transition existing usage before requests stop being served in the coming weeks.
- Enterprise customers: Verify your access path. Gemini CLI and IDE extensions remain available and unchanged for users on Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise licenses, or through Google Cloud. Paid Gemini and Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform API keys also continue to work.
- Users with custom scripts or automations: Audit any integrations that call Gemini CLI or the IDE extensions and update them to Antigravity CLI equivalents.
- Feedback and feature requests: Submit input through the official Antigravity CLI community forum at https://github.com/google-antigravity/antigravity-cli during the transition.
Enterprise and paid API access paths are unaffected by today’s changes.
