Anthropic launches a first-of-its-kind residency to close the enterprise AI talent gap by equipping customer and partner engineers with the same deployment standards used inside the company.

IN BRIEF

On October 2, 2026, Anthropic announced a $100 million commitment to Claude Frontier Academy, aiming to train 10,000 Frontier Deployed Engineers by the end of 2027, with initial cohorts drawn from Accenture, Bain, Capgemini, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Deloitte, McKinsey, Morgan Stanley, Novo Nordisk and others.

Anthropic is directing $100 million into Claude Frontier Academy to train 10,000 Frontier Deployed Engineers by the end of 2027, targeting the acute shortage of practitioners who can move large language models from pilot to production inside real enterprises. The program opens with engineers nominated by Accenture, Bain, Capgemini, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Deloitte, McKinsey, Morgan Stanley, Novo Nordisk and additional organizations still unnamed. Cohorts are already underway in San Francisco, New York and London.

The Academy’s core offering is the Frontier Deployed Engineer Residency. Participants begin with a multi-day in-person segment led by Anthropic engineers and licensed instructors. They complete a simulated enterprise deployment that covers use-case selection, security review and handover, then sit a graded practical. Those who pass receive the Claude Resident Engineer badge and advance into a 12-week residency. During the residency each engineer leads a live Claude project at their own organization while receiving continued support from Anthropic staff and peer learning from the cohort. A second assessment at the close of the twelve weeks confers the Claude Frontier Deployed Engineer badge; the first graduates are expected in early 2027.

Steve Corfield, Global Head of Business Development and Partnerships at Anthropic, framed the rationale: “A small team of high-agency people with the right skills, access to Claude, and a deep understanding of how their business runs can transform an entire company. The hard part is building that depth of talent, engineers with the highest level of AI fluency who can take Claude from an idea to a system in production and turn it into faster processes and new products and services. No AI company has invested in developing that talent inside its customers and partners at this depth. Claude Frontier Academy trains people the way our own engineers learn, and we want those who graduate to set the standard for how AI gets built inside a business.”

Eligibility is deliberately narrow. Organizations nominate hands-on software engineers who already possess strong fundamentals, a record of building with large language models, experience helping colleagues adopt AI tools, and a demonstrated focus on high-priority business problems. Prior agent-building experience is not required. Each nominee arrives with a named Claude project they will lead upon return. Participation remains by nomination only; interested firms are directed to their Anthropic account teams or Partner Account Managers.

Claude Frontier Academy extends Anthropic’s existing Claude Partner Network. Across that network more than 175,000 Claude certifications have already been earned by professionals at 46,000 firms, and nearly 4,000 people have completed Basecamp, the immersive curriculum previously reserved for Anthropic’s own Applied AI teams. The new Academy shifts the focus from broad certification volume to the smaller cadre of engineers expected to lead complex, production-grade deployments.

Partner statements released with the announcement emphasize practical outcomes over credential counts. Accenture highlighted the residency’s emphasis on judgment tested against simulated enterprise conditions. Capgemini pointed to the value of working side-by-side with Anthropic engineers. Commonwealth Bank of Australia noted that its teams have already achieved up to three times more code changes through AI tooling and expect the residency to deepen that capability. McKinsey and Novo Nordisk both framed the program as a means to translate frontier model access into measurable client and scientific impact.

For enterprise buyers and investors the announcement signals that Anthropic is treating talent scarcity as a strategic constraint on Claude adoption rather than a secondary market problem. By embedding its own internal training standards inside customer and consulting organizations, the company is attempting to expand the pool of engineers capable of delivering governed, production systems at scale. The $100 million figure and the explicit 10,000-engineer target by end-2027 provide concrete metrics against which progress can be measured.

WHY IT MATTERS: The program converts Anthropic’s internal deployment playbook into a scalable credentialing path for the firms that implement Claude at the largest enterprises. Success will be judged by whether the first 2027 graduates demonstrably accelerate production deployments and reduce the concentration of AI impact among a handful of high-agency individuals inside each customer organization.
