Anthropic Sets Retirement Dates for Multiple Claude Models

Anthropic has officially confirmed deprecation timelines for several Claude models, with two major deadlines looming in the coming weeks.

According to the company’s Model Deprecations page and recent release notes, developers using older Claude 4-series models will need to migrate before the models are retired from the API.

Key Dates

  • Claude Opus 4.1 (claude-opus-4-1-20250805): Deprecated as of June 5, 2026. Full retirement scheduled for August 5, 2026. Recommended migration target: claude-opus-4-8.
  • Claude Opus 4 (claude-opus-4-20250514) and Claude Sonnet 4 (claude-sonnet-4-20250514): Both retire on June 15, 2026 (just two days from now). Opus 4 users should move to claude-opus-4-8; Sonnet 4 users should move to claude-sonnet-4-6.
  • Claude Mythos Preview: Retires June 30, 2026. Recommended replacement is the newer claude-mythos-5 (currently gated/invitation-only).

Additional Changes

Starting with newer Opus models (Opus 4.7 and later, including Opus 4.8), Anthropic is enforcing stricter parameter rules. Setting temperature, top_p, or top_k to non-default values now returns a 400 error. The company recommends omitting these parameters entirely and relying on prompt engineering instead.

Developers can find the full details and migration guidance here:

  • Model Deprecations page (authoritative table): https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/model-deprecations
  • Release Notes (June 5 and April 14 announcements): https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/release-notes/overview
  • Migration Guide: https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/models/migration-guide

Anthropic has stated that impacted customers receive email notifications, and the company generally provides at least 60 days’ notice before retiring publicly released models.

With the June 15 deadline just days away, teams still running the original Claude 4 models are strongly encouraged to test and switch to the recommended newer versions immediately to avoid service interruptions.
