Barclays, the British universal bank, is expanding its strategic collaboration with Anthropic to integrate secure, enterprise-grade AI systems across its global operations. The bank is extending Claude to accelerate software development, modernize legacy systems, and improve operational efficiency. Claude Code adoption is expected to reach 50% of its developer population by the end of 2026, rising to a majority of software engineers in 2027.

Anne Marie Darling, Group Co-Chief Operating Officer at Barclays, framed the expansion as operational transformation rather than simple technology adoption: “The true measure of any technology is the impact it has on customers, clients, and colleagues, and the outcomes it enables. Expanding the use of Claude across Barclays is about more than adopting AI. It is about transforming how work gets done: reimagining processes, enhancing customer and client experiences, and building a simpler, more efficient organization within a secure and well-governed environment. By reducing time spent on routine activities and streamlining decision-making, we can enable colleagues to focus their expertise where it matters most, solving more complex problems, accelerating innovation, and delivering better outcomes for our customers, clients, and business.”

Craig Bright, also Group Co-Chief Operating Officer at Barclays, linked the deployment to both engineering and cyber security shifts: “Software engineering and cyber security are both being reshaped by increasingly capable AI systems. We’re moving towards AI as an increasingly agentic capability embedded within how we build, test, secure, and operate technology. At Barclays, we’re using Claude to help modernize legacy platforms, improve software quality, and allow our technical experts to focus on the most complex challenges. The combination of skilled engineers, cyber specialists, and trusted AI capabilities has the potential to fundamentally improve how technology is developed and managed across large-scale enterprises.”

One production use case already live is the Colleague Knowledge Assistant, powered by Claude through a retrieval-augmented generation architecture and active since 2025. More than 16,000 colleagues have adopted it, handling over one million searches in support of Barclays UK’s more than 20 million retail customers. The result is faster information access and quicker customer support.

In Barclays’ Global Markets business, Claude models classify, enrich, and route incoming client emails. The platform processes approximately 120,000 emails each day, reducing manual handling while helping colleagues identify and act on relevant information more efficiently.

Paul Smith, Chief Commercial Officer at Anthropic, positioned the relationship as a UK milestone defined by high standards: “Our work with Barclays is a significant milestone for us in the UK. Barclays serves millions of customers and clients across the globe, so their standard for AI is high. That’s why Barclays is rolling Claude out with strong security and oversight. Claude now helps 16,000 Barclays’ colleagues find answers for customers, sorts 120,000 emails a day, and will be in the hands of most Barclays engineers by 2027. Very few institutions hold AI to such a high standard.”

Barclays applies robust governance, security controls, and human oversight to AI use cases as it scales. The expanded partnership is presented as a long-term commitment to productivity, resilience, and improved customer and client outcomes through the combination of Anthropic’s frontier capabilities and the bank’s focus on responsible innovation.

WHY IT MATTERS

For enterprise buyers and investors tracking AI adoption in regulated finance, Barclays’ quantified developer penetration targets and live production volumes supply a concrete benchmark of scale under governance constraints. The explicit linkage of Claude to both software modernization and cyber security workflows signals that frontier models are moving from pilot to core infrastructure inside a major universal bank.
