MongoDB CEO Desai exits for Meta; Ittycheria returns as interim chief

Board reaffirms fiscal 2027 outlook and keeps Tuesday’s Investor Day as Desai takes Meta’s new enterprise AI brief

MongoDB Inc. said Monday that Chirantan “CJ” Desai has stepped down as president and CEO, effective immediately, to take a senior job at Meta Platforms Inc.

The board named Dev Ittycheria interim president and CEO the same day. Ittycheria held those titles from 2014 to 2025. Meta, in a separate post, said Desai will be chief enterprise platform officer and will report to founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

That is a same-day handoff, not a staged wind-down. Desai leaves a public company midstream. He walks into a newly named Meta unit whose first catalog is already written: the Muse agent, Meta Business Agent, Muse API and Muse Code.

MongoDB put the business case in one line from the chair.

“MongoDB’s business is strong, and there is no better person to take on the role of President and CEO in the interim than Dev Ittycheria,” said Tom Killalea, chairman of the board of directors. “He knows this company deeply, has remained an involved and active executive board member over the past year, and will step in immediately to ensure a seamless transition.”

Ittycheria’s earlier run is the board’s comfort object. Under him, the company said, annual revenue went from about $35 million to more than $2.3 billion. He stayed on the board after handing Desai the job. Now he has the job again while a search firm hunts a permanent CEO.

“I’m honored to step back into the President and CEO role at MongoDB,” said Ittycheria. “I was privileged to lead the company for more than a decade and help build MongoDB into the global business it is today. I know the company, our people and our customers extremely well, and I have enormous confidence in the opportunity ahead. I look forward to working with our leadership team and thousands of talented employees around the world to move quickly, execute with focus, and continue delivering exceptional value to our customers.”

Guidance did not move. MongoDB reaffirmed the third-quarter and full-year fiscal 2027 numbers it issued Sept. 1. Investor Day is still on for Tuesday, Sept. 29, at Nasdaq MarketSite, 11 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Eastern. The leadership team is slated to talk long-term strategy, markets and the data platform’s AI work. The teleconference link is in the release.

What buyers actually run sits in the boilerplate, and it is not small. MongoDB calls itself a unified platform for operational data, search, real-time analytics and AI retrieval, with Voyage AI embedding and reranking models attached. Atlas is the managed service. Enterprise Advanced and Community Edition are the self-managed paths. The company cites millions of developers and more than 70,000 customers, including about 75% of the Fortune 100.

Desai’s next desk is the other half of Monday’s paper. Zuckerberg said Meta is standing up Meta Enterprise Platform to sell AI to businesses. First shipment is the stack it already has.

“Initially, we will focus on bringing our full technology stack, including the Muse agent, Meta Business Agent, Muse API, Muse Code, and more to businesses and developers to help them grow.”

Desai described the mandate as turning that stack into things other companies can run.

“Meta Enterprise Platform will focus on turning its AI stack into products and services that companies can deploy for their own businesses.”

“As with Muse, security and privacy are built into Meta’s enterprise products from the outset.”

“Our goal is to make Meta the place enterprises come to scale their businesses.”

MongoDB’s release does not attach a start date to Desai’s CEO term. It only records that Ittycheria’s last full run ended in 2025. The risk section of the same release lists leadership transitions among the items that can knock results off course. That language was already on file. Monday made it live.

For a MongoDB customer, Tuesday is the first public test. Same guidance. Same Investor Day slot. A CEO who has sold this platform before is back on the mic. The open question is how long “interim” lasts and whether the product roadmap shifts while the search runs.

For anyone buying Meta’s new kit, the named surfaces are Muse API and Muse Code, plus the two agents. Pricing and a ship date were not in either company’s Monday text. Contract review starts there.

Two filings. One executive. A database vendor that says nothing operational has changed, and a social giant that says enterprise AI is now a pillar. The calendar does not wait. Nasdaq, tomorrow morning.
