ChatGPT’s Codex Adds Rate Limit Banking and Developer Mode

OpenAI has rolled out a new set of updates to ChatGPT and its Codex tool on June 11, 2026.

The changes are aimed at eligible Plus and Pro users and focus on quality-of-life improvements and stronger developer tooling.

Rate-limit reset banking
Eligible users now get one free rate-limit reset at launch. The update also introduces a referral system inside the Codex app. When a referred user sends their first Codex message, both the referrer and the recipient receive a banked reset. Banked resets remain usable for 30 days.

Developer mode
A new Developer mode is now available for browser use in Chrome and the Codex in-app browser. When enabled, Codex gains controlled access to the Chrome DevTools Protocol. This allows it to profile JavaScript, inspect console output and network traffic, review page state including the DOM and applied styles, and help diagnose live browser issues. The feature is off by default and can be toggled in Codex app settings.

Additional updates

  • New /init command that generates an AGENTS.md project-instructions scaffold.
  • Customizable macOS Dock icons.
  • “Unread chats” section added to the command menu.
  • Clearer usage-limit error messages that now include plan and workspace guidance plus reset timing details when available.

These updates continue OpenAI’s push to make Codex more useful for power users and developers building agentic workflows.
